Year 2

Year 2 Summer Overview

During the summer term in Year 2, we are introducing the theme ‘Our Environment’ to the children. Across a range of subjects, the children will develop an awareness of the need to look after our world.

Literacy will be inspired by the nature-loving Beatrix Potter. Her classic text, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, will be the stimulus for much of our writing. The children will write a recount of their "hunt for Peter Rabbit" and will also embody a disgruntled Mr. McGregor writing a letter of complaint. In Geography, we are thinking about our local environment, looking at the United Kingdom before zooming in to have a closer look at land use in and around our school. This will culminate in a visit to Ashton Park to complete our fieldwork, where we shall explore how we feel about the park and what improvements we want to see. In Science, we are moving on to our plant topic, thinking carefully about the lifecycle of a plant and what they need to survive.

For the second half of the term, our focus will be on all things bees. The children will start their literacy exploration by looking at non-fiction texts before creating their own narrative about a bee’s journey. In History, our focus stays local with a case study on Ashton Park. We will use sources to explore when the park opened and, after our visit, compare old photos to see how it has changed over the years. Finally, the children will decide whether they think Ashton Park should be a protected area. Our D.T. will revolve around healthy eating as we create a balanced wrap. This will help the children develop their cutting, chopping, and grating skills. P.E. will also be spent outside, where the children will craft their athletics skills before participating in Sports Day.

If you have any interesting facts or knowledge linked to the above topics that may help the year group, please email your child’s class teacher. We would love to hear from you!
